Leapfrogging Barriers. Harvesting Opportunities

Making Avocado Farming Inclusive. Empowering Every Farmer.

Making Avocado Farming Inclusive for Smallholders

In Tanzania’s Southern Highlands, avocado farming is lucrative but often out of reach for many smallholder farmers. While smallholders contribute roughly 70% of national avocado production, the high costs of seedlings, irrigation, and farm management keep many from fully benefiting from this growing market.

Avocado4All was created with a simple goal: no farmer should be left behind. SAADIT’s modern nursery provides free, high-quality avocado seedlings, enabling smallholders to overcome financial barriers and access income-generating opportunities.

This project is part of the Tanzania Tree Crops Development Initiative, promoting sustainable agroforestry and agroecology.

Each avocado farm incorporates windbreak trees and cover crops like legumes, which improve soil health, prevent erosion, enrich nitrogen, and provide additional food and income—strengthening both livelihoods and local food security.

Beyond seedlings, farmers receive training, mentorship, and best-practice guidance, ensuring high survival rates and long-term productivity. Early monitoring shows seedling survival above 85%, highlighting both the quality of our inputs and the effectiveness of community support.

Every seedling represents a step toward inclusive economic growth, climate-smart farming, and resilient communities. With Avocado4All, we are transforming smallholder livelihoods one avocado—and one tree—at a time, making the benefits of Tanzania’s avocado economy accessible to everyone.
